Preparing Your Pool for Monsoon & Wind Season

A practical southwest Las Vegas checklist: chemistry, equipment, dust and debris, and post-storm recovery steps.

Updated 2025-08-05 · Seasonal

Monsoon moisture, wind, and dust are part of southwest Las Vegas life. Pools don’t need panic—they need a plan. A little preparation reduces damage risk, shortens recovery, and protects equipment when weather turns rough.

Before storm and wind season (do this once)

  • Know where the pump timer/breaker is and how to shut equipment down safely
  • Photograph your equipment pad for insurance and repair reference
  • Store chemicals in a dry, secured place
  • Confirm your service provider’s recovery process and contact info
  • Clear loose yard items that can blow into the pool

When rough weather is approaching

Water level and chemistry

Ensure chemistry is in a healthy range going in; balanced water is easier to recover later than water that was already neglected. Heavy rain (when it comes) can dilute sanitizer—plan to retest afterward.

Equipment

Secure or store lightweight accessories (cleaners, poles, furniture cushions). Turn off equipment if flooding or unsafe electrical conditions are expected. Never operate electrical equipment in standing water—electrical work should be handled by a licensed professional.

Debris reduction

Bring in loose screens, toys, and décor. Trim what you can safely ahead of time, but avoid risky ladder work in high winds.

After the storm or dust event

  1. Prioritize personal safety first.
  2. Remove large debris before restarting equipment.
  3. Inspect the pad for standing water, damaged wires, or shifted equipment.
  4. Restart only when it’s safe; watch for unusual noises or leaks.
  5. Expect chemistry to be off—test and rebalance; call for recovery if green.

Why pools go green after weather events

Power outages stop circulation and sanitation. Heat plus debris feeds algae. Dust loads filters. Even well-kept pools can turn if downtime is long—which is why professional green pool recovery is a common post-event service.
