Southwest Las Vegas is a fantastic place to own a pool—and a demanding one. Intense sun, low humidity, dust and wind, hard water pressure, and monsoon-season storms all push chemistry and equipment harder than milder climates. The good news: with a few desert-specific habits, you can stay ahead of most problems.
1. Respect chlorine demand in the heat
UV light and higher water temperatures increase sanitizer demand. What “worked” in January may be too light in July. If your pool sits in full sun or sees heavy use, expect to monitor chlorine more closely—or rely on a professional weekly service that adjusts for conditions.
2. Dust and wind are not free filtration tests
Desert wind loads skimmers and filters with grit and debris. After a dusty or windy day, empty baskets, check filter pressure, and make sure the pump ran long enough to turn the water over. Extended outages plus heat are a classic path to green water.
3. Run circulation enough for real turnover
Variable-speed pumps make efficient longer runtimes possible. The goal is effective turnover and filtration—not the shortest schedule that still “looks okay” until algae appears. If water is frequently dull, runtime and filter condition are early places to look.
4. Watch the waterline and baskets
Wind and landscaping can clog skimmers fast. Empty baskets between visits when debris is heavy. A skimmer that can’t pull water freely is an invitation for pump stress and poor surface cleaning.
5. Plan for monsoon and wind season before you need to

6. Balance matters as much as “having chlorine”
High or low pH reduces sanitizer effectiveness and comfort. Alkalinity stabilizes pH. Calcium and cyanuric acid (stabilizer) also matter—especially with outdoor desert pools and hard local water. Learn the basics in our chemistry guide.
7. Equipment lives a hard life here
Year-round heat and long runtimes mean pumps, filters, and salt cells work hard. Listen for new noises, watch filter pressure trends, and don’t ignore small leaks at the pad. Preventive attention is almost always cheaper than emergency replacement during a holiday weekend.
